Hope you are all continuing to practice with your cameras and capturing shots of “three of your favorite things” for this months assignment! When you upload them to our Flickr, please tag your assignments using “July_Assignment_09” so that we can pull them all out on the flickr site. If you’re having any troubles linking up to or joining our Flickr group, please shoot me a comment!
I’m VERY excited to announce that Janet Klinger has agreed to be our guest speaker for our upcoming meeting on July 20th. Janet is an award-winning photographer who takes breathtaking wedding, maternity and family photos. She is also a fellow mama in the Greenlake area! She will be setting up our studio space and giving us hands-on techniques for capturing portraits of our kiddies, using simple props that you can find in your home.
Janet has provided us with the following brain-game below is pre- inspiration for the August assignment which she’s entitled: “Starry eyed”, Catching the Catch-light with Heart. This assignment will get us all thinking about identifying and using light within and around our subjects. (note– this is to think about in preparation for our July meeting and August photo assignment which she’ll describe at the meeting, but the July assignment is still the same):
1) Begin by noting your favorite locations and when the space is best lit. Often North light is indirect and least intense making skin appear baby-smooth, but you need enough of it.
Streaming window-light is tricky, but well worth the extra time manually determining exposure. Keep notes, mental or otherwise. (Examples: Bathroom, 3-5PM direct light. Baby-room, dark. Mom & Dad bedroom, sunrays in the early AM, etc.)
2) Considering your favorite photo-inspiring-cutie, what look, activity, moment in the day really grabs your heart? Keep a list.
3) Watch for a light in the eye of all you talk with. If there is one, can you determine where the light is coming from? It’s source? (window light, your white shirt, reflection off the neighbors house, the table lamp.)
Hope you are all having fun shooting pictures out in the amazing weather, and looking forward to seeing you all again in a few weeks!
