First meeting, and photo assignment for July!

It’s very exciting that so many mamas are interested in getting better at digital photography! Our first meeting is set for Monday, June 15 from 6:30-8pm at Studio R in Fremont (315 N 36th St, Suite 201).

I created this blog so that we will have a site that we can use to communicate about upcoming meetings, and so we can share tips and resources. For our group photo assignments I’ve also created a group on Flickr. (You’ll need an invite to post.) I will be learning to get better at all these tools at the same time as getting better with my Canon, so hopefully you will all bear with me.

Our first photo assignment for the July meeting, given by Nancy Treder our guest speaker next week, will be to photograph “Three of my favorite things.” This will be a great way for us to get to know each other and to exercise our creative juices. When you are photographing, if you can, try and keep notes about what camera settings you used and if you did anything in photoshop to manipulate the photo.

Happy shooting!

  1. I am one of the folks who does not yet have a good camera. If any of you are willing to share how you chose what you are shooting with that would be really helpful to me as I prepare to purchase one. Thank you. Ann

    1. I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1, they just came out with this camera in May. I researched the purchase a bunch- and I’m happy with it. It is a really great camera, I liked the way it feels in my hands (definitely go hold and shoot with a few cameras at Glazers Camera if you can) also it takes HD video, which is nice as an option — though sometimes I find it easier to just take video on the point & shoot.

  2. I just have a Canon Rebel xti, which is fine for my purposes and ability. But I have been hearing amazing things about the new Sony. It has a live LCD screen (it was hard for me to go back to the viewfinder). It also has an internal stabilization system, which makes the lenses cheaper. Suposedly the price is relatively reasonable. If I had not invested so much in all my cannon lenses I would seriously think about getting the Sony.

  3. Hey shutterbugs,
I really enjoyed the meeting and getting to know some you on Monday night. I learned so much from Janet and yourselves. Thank you!
If you have a moment I would LOVE it if you emailed me some of your favorite shots of my baby, Lauren. Unfortunately, most of the photos I took did not turn out so well. The focus was usually on the fabric and her face was blurry.
    Thanks, Valerie
